Manual install/Synaptic Questions

Post by gangelo »

I want to install the Qt IDE...

I noticed that I can download Qt using Synaptic (Package qt-sdk) but there is a comment saying "Canonical does not provide updates for qt-sdk. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community." Is this saying that I may not get, or, be notified when there are changes to the app? Is it better to just download and install manually in this case from here: http://qt.nokia.com/downloads/sdk-linux-x11-32bit-cpp?

If it is better to just do it manually, I usually download the bin in to my ~/Downloads folder, but I wouldn't know where to install it from there. I want everyone using my workstation to use it. I noticed that some of the apps I've installed using mintInstall installed to /usr/share. Is this the correct location? Are there any "rules" to follow as to where exactly to install your bin's?

Thanks

You will get updates for anything installed through synaptic
That "canonical does not" statement is only there to tell you it's not an "official" Ubuntu package
Always use Synaptic, apt or the software portal if you can
