how to get the .inf file

I was wondering if anyone can tell me an easy way to get drivers for my hardware from .exe files. For example. The support page for my notebook provides a .exe file to automatically install the driver for the internal wireless card. How can I access these drivers. I tried wine and its not very helpful. Thanks

That depends. If it is a "self unpacking zip" it's just to unpack it, but you mean a "real" exe I suppose. It is possible to back engineer the code but that's a bit besides normal practise.
If you have windows or wine installed, installing the exe and then recover the inf is one way.

Open the Terminal and type:

cabextract filename.exe

Shouldn't that work?

The simplest solution is to find a friend with a windows box and have them unpack everything (eg to a USB stick) and then install the inf file that way.

If you give more info about the notebook and wireless card I might be able to find the .inf or instructions to install that card.

i'm running a ibm t40, pretty much default parts except a bit of addition to the ram. My wireless card in this laptop is whats really giving me problems. Basically at this point I have win xp installed on this laptop, I have all the drivers installed up and running, and I want to know what to do to get them off this terrible terrible OS so I can put mint back on. I've made a few posts asking quesitons about my wireless card with minimal success ( but lots of thanks to those who did help) . Let me know what you think - Thanks

If you have XP on the lappy with wifi working the inf file is there in the inf forlder of Windows

I would try what Red-e-Made suggested.

You can try unzip or cabextract to see if they manage to open and decompress the EXE. The inf should be in there.
