Linux Mint 8 Cisco aironet 340 Wireless card not working

Post by potski »

Good evening.
I'm running Linux 8 kernel 2.6.31-14-generic
Gnome 2.28.1
I'm trying to get the above wireless network card working.
Ive tried the nWindows wireless drivers all and files for win98 2k, nt, and xp and non of them work.
It says netx500 hardware not present (drivers from cisco website)

The Wireless card works in XP on the same system.

I've run the lspci and nothing is showing
I've tried it in the propriertory drivers and it is not showing.
In network tools it can see it and shows the hardware address.

Any ideas?

According to http://linux-wless.passys.nl/query_part ... name=Cisco this card should work perfectly with the drivers from the cisco website. We're going to need more information about what you have done in order to help. Outputs of ifconfig, lsmod might also be useful for starters.

Thanks for responding. I'm completely new to Linux so please bear with me.
I have run the 2 commands in terminal and i've pasted it below. It is the eth2 that is the wireless card.

Re: Linux Mint 8 Cisco aironet 340 Wireless card not working

Ok, so the drivers are being loaded and the card is initialized. You said you tried the Windows drivers, was this via the Windows Wireless Drivers app? Can you check the folder /etc/modprobe.d and see if there's a file called ndiswrapper there. If there is remove it as root - right mouse the background and open as root. Also in Hardware Drivers are there any options for your wifi card?

If you left click on the network manager icon on the tray, does it show any networks? If not right click the icon and toggle Enable Networking off then back on, then try the left click again. Has anything changed?

Failing that, open a terminal and enter

Code: Select all

sudo ifconfig eth2 up
sudo iwlist scan
and post the results back here. Also run

Code: Select all

dmesg
and check through the output for any errors relating to pcmcia or your wifi card. Post those here too if any.

Yes, After it not working out of the box i tried the windows drivers through the Windows Wireless Drivers app.
I have been to:
/etc/modprobe.d
and there was an ndiswrapper file so deleted as requested.

There is no card showing in the Hardware Drivers.

If i left click on the network manager in the bottom right it says wireless networks device not ready (greyed out).
If i right click then both the enable networking aand enable wireless are ticked.

I have run the commands you specified and the following was shown:

potski@PBell-Laptop ~ $ sudo ifconfig eth2 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such device
potski@PBell-Laptop ~ $ sudo iwlist scan
lo Interface doesn't support scanning.

eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

eth2 Interface doesn't support scanning.

wifi0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

This seems to be a problem and it's funny that wifi0 wasn't mentioned in ifconfig? I'm also wondering why udev is changing eth1 to eth2?

Before we do anything else, can I just confirm with you that this is a pcmcia card rather than an internal PCI card?

Can you try this again but with wifi0

Code: Select all

sudo ifconfig wifi0 up
sudo iwlist scan
Also post the output of

Code: Select all

lshw -C network
Lastly going back to OP, you mentioned drivers from the cisco site, were you talking about Windows drivers or linux drivers? If the latter, what did you do with them?
