Performance Tweaks?

Post by bigBuckets »

I've seen a few tutorials on how to tweak the performance of SSD's -- will the same tweaks work for HDD's?

For example, setting /tmp, /var/log, and /var/tmp to run on the RAM and set the parent temp directory to /tmp in Firefox.

Here's the links:

The Open Office tweaks greatly reduced the time it took to open, even without the Quickstarter running in the panel.
OOo. Select Tools -> Options. Select Memory.
Number Of Steps: 20
Use for OpenOffice.org: 128
Memory Per Object: 20
Number Of Objects: 20
Enable Quickstarter: Checked
Select Java.
Use a JRE: Checked (Alternately, Uncheck if you do not have Sun Java installed)
Select the radio button of the appropriate Java Engine if needed.
Click OK
Close OOo
I'm running Mint 8 main, on a Lenovo G530 notebook.

In a word, YES
--an ssd is simply another style of hard drive. But, pick the tweaks you want to try !
  • Using a RAM disk will always work, if you have enough memory, but if you are not swapping now, is it really useful
--you could try preload or prelink instead ..
If an application takes long to open, like firefox, and you need it, you might be better off having it as an autostart application, so that when the desktop eventually loads, the application is ready to use..
--just like autostarting an application on boot, loading (filling a RAM) disk takes time

Thanks! Just for fun I tried all the tweaks. Hulu videos at fullscreen are much smoother and normal browsing seems a bit faster.
