Renaming many files at once

Not really knowing what precisely you want and what files we're dealing with here I think it would be too dangerous to give you a shell script that would do exactly what you wrote up there in that too short sentence. One typo and my script could ruin your system.

So I'd suggest you apt-get install the tool mmv and then read its man page ... e.g. man mmv

try installing thunar, then go to Applications->Accessories->Bulk Rename

i think it might be what your looking for.
