Renaming many files at once

I want to rename all the files in a folder to follow a pattern...something like file1, file2, file3 etc. How do I do it??

Not really knowing what precisely you want and what files we're dealing with here I think it would be too dangerous to give you a shell script that would do exactly what you wrote up there in that too short sentence. One typo and my script could ruin your system.

So I'd suggest you apt-get install the tool mmv and then read its man page ... e.g. man mmv

try installing thunar, then go to Applications->Accessories->Bulk Rename
