Manually disconnect (unplug) and then reconnect the USB drives and then
run this command in a terminal and post the output.

Code: Select all

mount
Also, check if you can see the drives in the Partition Editor (gparted).
You may need to install it.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install gparted

ok one of the dirves was found and auto-mounted by unpluging and pluging the usb. but one still wont mount.
Mount command gives
mount
/dev/sda1 on / type ext3 (rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
/sys on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev)
varrun on /var/run type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,mode=0755)
varlock on /var/lock type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,mode=1777)
udev on /dev type tmpfs (rw,mode=0755)
devshm on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)
lrm on /lib/modules/2.6.24-27-generic/volatile type tmpfs (rw)
binfmt_misc on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev)
gvfs-fuse-daemon on /home/jay/.gvfs type fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon (rw,nosuid,nodev,user=jay)
/dev/sdb1 on /media/disk type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal,shortname=mixed,uid=1000,utf8,umask=077,flush)
/dev/sdc1 on /media/disk-1 type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal,shortname=mixed,uid=1000,utf8,umask=077,flush)
/dev/sdd1 on /media/FreeAgent Drive type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,allow_other,blksize=4096)

and I dont have root password for system. I never set one up. so I cant do anything with gparted because its a weapon of mass destruction?
also ran lsusb again

You do not require a root password, just input your user password.

Sudo gives a user "root" rights temporarily.

Which one was found, the "new" one or the "old" one?

What size are the Hitachi drives, and are they SATA or PATA?
If you don't know, then please provide the exact name/model number of the drives.

Incidentally, why are you using such an old distibution of Mint?
They are up to Mint 9 now you know.

The new 320gib drive was found but the 40gib is not. both are SATA to usb

Well this comp is an old 2003 hp and i was not sure what it could run. I mainly use this for media storage, backup files, transfer files and web surfing. I had vista 32bit (slow compared to xp) on this till about 8 months ago when i had massive reg errors and couldn't recover. so i decided to give linux a shot. Im currently downloading 9 RC to put on another hp hand me down with similer problems.

Ok ran sudo gparted with all 4 drives connected and this is what i got:

/dev/sda (111.81GiB) primary in the box
/dev/sdb (465.76 GiB) external 500gib freeagent
/dev/sdc (298.09 GiB) external Hitachi 320gib
/dev/sdd (931.51 GiB) external 1tb freeagent
the 40gib hitachi is not here but the drive is seen and mounted by xp, vista, and ps3. Any ideas?

Try plugging it into a different USB port while running Mint 5 and see if it is detected.

I would be interested in knowing if it is detected by Mint 9 on the other PC.

See what this command shows you (That is a lower case "''L" not a "1")

Code: Select all

sudo sfdisk -l
and also this command

Code: Select all

sudo lshw -C disk
Post the outputs for analysis.

cheers
