SOLVED! Going back to mint 8 helena for awhile.
Okay. I have just finished re-installing Mint 9. The full DVD not the OEM version. I now know some of the questions I will encounter.
What order should I do the things I have tried to do before. For instance; Should I do the flashplayer install before or after I try to activate the nVidia drivers and enable desktop effects?
I think with what I have already gotten below, I should be able to get it if I just have a little guidance on the sequence.
Thanks for your patience,
Raven

Re: And yet again I come with a hatful of questions
Flash player is already installed, why are you trying to install it again?
[Edit] your original post and add [SOLVED] once your question is resolved.

Re: And yet again I come with a hatful of questions
It is kind of confusing. If you open up synaptic and do a search for "flash" you will see two similar packages:
adobe-flashplugin - which is not installed
flashplugin-installer - which is installed by default
If you look at the description of the two they both do the same thing. From the flashplugin-installer:
adobe-flashplugin - which is not installed
flashplugin-installer - which is installed by default
If you look at the description of the two they both do the same thing. From the flashplugin-installer:
If you have any doubts test it at: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/This package will download the Flash Player from the net. It is a
Netscape/Mozilla type plugin. Any browser based on Netscape or Mozilla can
use the Flash plugin. This package currently supports the following browsers:
Mozilla, Mozilla-Firefox, Firefox, Iceweasel, and Iceape. Also Galeon and
Epiphany can use the Flash plugin. Konqueror can also use the Flash plugin if
konqueror-nsplugins is installed.
WARNING: Installing this Ubuntu package causes the Adobe flash plugin to be
downloaded from http://www.adobe.com. The distribution license of the Adobe flash
plugin is available at http://www.adobe.com. Installing this Ubuntu package implies
that you have accepted the terms of that license.
Please add a [SOLVED] at the end of your original subject header if your question has been answered and solved.

Re: And yet again I come with a hatful of questions
Well, it's doing something although if it does the right thing it will be purely accidental and not from any knowledge on my part. I found and opened the synaptics package manager and found flashpluin-installer and clicked on it and it appeared in the box below there and hit the apply button. We'll see in a minute.
Nope, that did not do it. If it is already installed why won't it play the video on msnbc.com? "To watch video in the new msnbc.com player, you will need to update your version of the Adobe Flash Player."
What's next?

Re: And yet again I come with a hatful of questions
I know you said you tried the commands, but open up a terminal and copy and paste this into it:
Code: Select all
apt install adobe-flashplugin

Re: And yet again I come with a hatful of questions
Don' see any line that referred to adobe-flashplugin at all.
I tried the code you gave and got this in return:
<raven@ravenslap ~ $ apt install adobe-flashplugin
[sudo] password for raven:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

Re: And yet again I come with a hatful of questions
Went back and closed all other processes and then I got this:
raven@ravenslap ~ $ apt install adobe-flashplugin

Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package adobe-flashplugin is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

Hmm.. it seems something is off with your repositories. Have you changed them at all?

Re: And yet again I come with a hatful of questions
I have no clue about either what or where a repository might be. Something has changed though, my nVidia drivers are no longer present so I get no desktop effects now.Kaye wrote:Hmm.. it seems something is off with your repositories. Have you changed them at all?

RavenStandsAlone,
I just installed Adobe Flash Player on my Mint 9 install and I had to reboot the system before Shockwave flash would show up in the Firefox plug-ins list.
Have you rebooted since installing Flash Player?

Yep, and now it is working. Haven't checked to see about my nVidia drivers yet.Aging Technogeek wrote:RavenStandsAlone,
