Rookie question for Mint 9 amd64 main RAM
Like the title says I'm running Mint 9 amd64 main on a dual-core Pentium D 2.8GHz. I have 5GB of RAM installed but the System Monitor says that I only have 3.4GB. What's the problem here, and how do I fix it.
I am a linux rookie by all means so please be kind to my stupidity.

Are you sure you have the 64bit version installed?cultural deviant wrote:Like the title says I'm running Mint 9 amd64 main on a dual-core Pentium D 2.8GHz. I have 5GB of RAM installed but the System Monitor says that I only have 3.4GB. What's the problem here, and how do I fix it.

There have been reports of people downloading and installing iso images that were marked 64 bit but were actually 32 bit.
Run this in a terminal.
Code: Select all
uname -a
Code: Select all
jason@jasons-laptop ~ $ uname -a
Linux jasons-laptop 2.6.32-22-generic #33-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 28 13:28:05 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
If you did inadvertently install the 32 bit version you 2 options.
1. Redownload and install the 64 bit version.
OR
2. install the PAE Kernel from the package manager.

@ cultural deviant
Where did you get these supposed 'get-deb' files?
They are not repository source files.
A repository doesn't end in "gz, bz2 or gpg"
You should probably go to the main 'Get-Deb' site and find the correct source repositories for what you want to do.
And why do you need a 'Get-Deb' repository anyway? Doesn't the Ubuntu/Mint repositories have what you need?

Get-Deb repositories should look something like these.
Found this at the Get-Deb website >>

Both the removed.net and removed.net websites are currently down but if you want to use the repositories, there is a mirror you can use instead of the original removed / removed repository.
Re: Rookie question for Mint 9 amd64 main RAM
vrkalak- The removed repo is available in Mint 9 by default it can be enabled in the other software sections. (Although it's useless at the moment as removed is down right now)vrkalak wrote:@ cultural deviant

Well cultural deviant you're running 64bit alright. I don't know what to tell you about that.
You're getting the removed errors because the site is down, has been for about a week now.
To fix that go to the package manager> Settings> Repositories> Other Software and uncheck the box in front of http://archive.removed/ubuntu.....
The Medibuntu repo does that to me sometimes check back later it'll probably clear it's self up.
Re: Rookie question for Mint 9 amd64 main RAM
So you have no idea why my system says that I only have 3.4 GB of RAM? For the record, the BIOS shows that I have 5GB installed.
Re: Rookie question for Mint 9 amd64 main RAM
Its just a reporting problem from the last edition, if it helps it did not seem to degraded performance in Mint 8. Don't worry be happy.cultural deviant wrote:So you have no idea why my system says that I only have 3.4 GB of RAM? For the record, the BIOS shows that I have 5GB installed.

Help!! Linux ate my RAM!! >> http://www.linuxatemyram.com/cultural deviant wrote: I have 5GB of RAM installed but the System Monitor says that I only have 3.4GB. What's the problem here, and how do I fix it.
My RAM is being eaten. >> http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/linux- ... eaten.html
These are just a few of the responses to this question ... taken from 'other' Linux distro Forums.
So obviously, this is not an isolated problem.

Re: Rookie question for Mint 9 amd64 main RAM
I'm stupid. Please explain this. BIOS says 5GB. Linux system manager says 3.4GB. Terminal says
free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 3522 3498 24 0 24 2699
-/+ buffers/cache: 774 2747
Swap: 10315 0 10315
So do I have full use of my 5GB of RAM or not?
Linux isn't eating my RAM, it's not seeing it.

Re: Rookie question for Mint 9 amd64 main RAM
Look at the tab in System Monitor that shows how your resources are being used, there are pie chart type diagrams for RAM and swap usage.
Unless you are maxed out on RAM use and using swap it really doesn't matter if it can't see your missing 1.6gb
