Removing Linux Mint 9

Post by DSM2512 »

OK I've mucked up! :|
I have a dual boot system with Vista and Linux Mint 8 and chose to up-grade to Linux Mint 9. I have ended up with a tri-boot system, and prefer to remove 9 and start again.
How to remove 9 please! :(

That greatly depends on how you have your installs set up. More information is need please.

Boot from a LiveCD, and issue the following command from a Terminal:

sudo fdisk -l

Letter 'L' (-l) lists your hard drive(s), partitions, as well as file system.

Post the information you obtain here for someone to help you.

Can anyone help me?
I've posted my hard disk details and have yet to see a reply.
I know it's asking a lot for complete strangers to help another, and i know the answer is probably very easy to solve, just point me in the right direction please!

Boot into Linux Mint 8, then run these commands

Code: Select all

sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
Then start Gparted, and delete the Linux Mint 9 partition and the extra swap partition (you may need to right-click the swap partition and turn it off first).

You should be good to go after this.

Many thanks for that :D
I'm relatively new to Linux and need a large L plate on my back!

markcynt,

In GParted, would Mint 9 and its extra Swap partition be the last two created in the following listing:

/dev/sda5 39296 59923 165694378+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 59924 60801 7052503+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris

If you installed Linux Mint 9 after Linux Mint 8, then yes.

Gparted won't let you delete the Linux Mint 8 partition if that's the one you're booted into.

As for the swap on /dev/sda8, that's the one you delete no matter what.
