Linux Mint Helena ext4error

Post by gaaard »

Hello eveybody =)

Newbie here.
I'm using Helena 8 in a desktop with a single hd and no other distros. My system freezes after some time working, especially if there are files copying. the system images in the buttons stop appearing, then the menu won't respond and so on until nothing else moves but the cursor. Then it goes black and I get this message:

Linux mint 8 Helena main edition tty1user/desktop login [801.309147] ext4error (device sda1) ext4_find_entry: reading directing # 113196 offset 0
[801.309303] ext4error (device sda1) ext4_find_entry: reading directing # 113196 offset 0

I started having this problem before with another hd; thinking it was my hd, I changed it.

I got a TB, installed Helena using sda1 for the installation, then a swap and approx 600gb for /home where i keep my information and a fat32 partition (which has no info)

do i have to format it again? and change/redistribute the partitions?

I'm in big need of advice, I'm afraid i could be damaging my disk or misusing it.

Thanks a lot in advance

I still can't fix this.
Rebooting right after it crashes, I get

GRUB loading Read Error

not being able to log in =(

All elektricity off for couple of minutes and then a new try. If does not work still, try to rescue via live-CD using a terminal commands.

Code: Select all

sudo fdisk -l

......eg sda1 partition check

sudo fsck -fyc /dev/sda1

Partitions must be umounted during an operation.

Thanks. I tried leaving off power for some time. When that happened with the other hd,starting it again, i got a fdisk command line suggestion at the beginning, which fixed the situation temporarily. So i rescued my files.

I tried checking the disk in another pc and it didn't work, just out of curiosity, I changed the sata cable and it worked ( in the other computer) I backed up some files and i'm checking it back with the original pc.

Could it be that the sda error I'm getting is because of a faulty sata cable?
I'll post updates on this situation if anything else happens.

Thanks in advance.
