Hi,
I'm completely new to Linux and Mint.
Having spent sometime checking everything works from the live disc I am about to a full install and wipe Vista (tired of watching the little blue circle going round)
I realise that dual boot is an option but I am keen to embark on a totally new experience and discard windows altogether and Mint seems to fulfill my computing needs without too much trouble.
Now to the question, the install will be from the dvd version, what steps should I take immediately after installation and are there any services that I would be well advised to turn off?
I have no need to connect to other computers, windows or otherwise.

Welcome to the Linux Mint community. I know you will really enjoy using Mint. You will find an excellent guide to the installation of Linux Mint 9 here:
http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-d ... -9-isadora
It covers installation from start to finish, and a nice guide to post-installation options. It will give you an excellent idea of some of the software you will need to be able to use your system as fully as you did in Windows.

Thank you.
I've just checked that out and it looks like a good start guide.
Whenever I've done a fresh install of Vista I have always spent an hour or so afterwards deactivating unneccesary services and locking the system down.
Is there any need for this in Mint?
Possible security loopholes to services that I might not need?

Re: Basic help
Check "Startup Applications" in the menu after installation. I always disable a couple things I don't use like Bluetooth Mananger, Remote Desktop, Visual Assistance, etc.
Security-wise your already pretty-well covered.

O.k, thanks, I think that gives me enough to be going on with and I daresay I'll be back with more questions over the next three years or so
Hopefully, in time, I'll be able give some help to other users that are just starting out with linux.
Thank you both for pointing me in the right direction to start my journey.
