Could not download all repository indexes?

Postby _Matt on Sat Aug 07, 2010 3:46 pm

I went into software sources to add something so I could install Global Menu I got "Could not download all repository indexes, here's a screenie:

and here's what the rest says:

Failed to fetch http://packages.linuxmint.com/dists/isadora/Release.gpg Something wicked happened resolving 'packages.linuxmint.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname)
Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists ... elease.gpg Something wicked happened resolving 'security.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname)

Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I also get this "Could not download all repository indexes when I try to refresh Update Manager.

How can I fix this?

Just try again in a little while. Either something was being added to the repo or it was down.

I would suggest trying a mirror site to update the repositories and see if that resolves the issue. If it does, you could switch back to the default site in a day or three once the server issue is cleared up.

> Menu > Administration > Software Sources > <Linux Mint> tab, in the <Download From> drop down list select the nearest mirror to you.

This has been showing up the past four days.

Edit:
I tried a United States server and a Canada one, and even then it couldn't download all repository indexes.

I am having the same problem. Can anyone help? Here is my info:
I have used Mint for over three years now and shortly before the end of Mint 8 cycle, I began getting a message like this after doing an update. I have followed may instructions to correct this to no avail. I have reinstalled Mint 9 but the message appears before I have made any changes after trying to update my system. I have also tried different download mirrors.

Weather trying to use Update Manager or reload Synaptic, I get the following message:

Failed to fetch http://packages.linuxmint.com/dists/isadora/Release.gpg Something wicked happened resolving 'packages.linuxmint.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname)

Failed to fetch http://packages.linuxmint.com/dists/isa ... -en_CA.bz2 Something wicked happened resolving 'packages.linuxmint.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname)

Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/ ... elease.gpg Something wicked happened resolving 'archive.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname)

Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/ ... -en_CA.bz2 Something wicked happened resolving 'archive.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname)

Failed to fetch http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/dis ... elease.gpg Something wicked happened resolving 'archive.canonical.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname)

Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I have since gone to Ubuntu but prefer Mint. Any suggestions? Here is my sources.list

I resolved the conflict in Mint 9 today with this solution today:

In Terminal, type gedit /resolv.conf

Make a backup of /resolv.conf before making any changes. (I backed it up by saving it as resolv.confbackup but use what is comfortable for you)

At the top of the list, add:
# google nameservers
nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4

Save the file and do your sudo apt-get update. I hope this helps. This worked for me.

I must follow up on my last post. By editing the file, it is only (for me) a temporary solution. Every time I reboot, the file changes. Here is the latest update that is working. Sorry, can't find the exact link I followed but here is what I did:

Open the Network Connection dialogue box.
Highlight the auto eth0 line and click on Edit
Next, click on the IPv4 settings tab
For Method, choose Automatic (DHCD) address only
DNS servers should be 8.8.8.8
Click on apply. You may lose your network connection but not to worry. Reboot your computer and you should be up and running. Hope this works.
