My laptop indicator lights show when battery is charging or discharging but the OS doesn't.
Installed several battery monitors using package manager and none worked. Searching revealed that I needed to recompile the kernel, so I Googled some more. D'oh! Mint comes with a battery monitor. Tried 'Add to Panel' but no battery monitor is among the items listed.
The Power Manager Preferences dialog box has two tabs: 'On AC Power' and 'General'. Yes, I checked: the laptop has a battery.
acpi -V returned no battery info.

Re: Power Management applet doesn't see my battery
You probably accidentally removed the power manager applet from the panel. (Search Google for questions along this vein)
I have two Toshiba Satellite laptops, and both of them display the battery applets on the panel.
