No Control-Click Menu (MacBook, Mint 9 - Main)

Post by Boot Boy »

Hello everyone!
I am exceptionally grateful for Linux Mint, it is my introduction to Linux and I'm very excited.
I recently installed Linux Mint 9 Isadora, and have had very little in the way of problems. (By problems, I don't mean errors on behalf of the system, just my ability to learn).
So far the only modification besides a Firefox theme and a desktop wallpaper is the installation of GPointing Device Settings to improve my touchpad response and clear up a few scrolling preferences.

I have restarted since I first noticed I had no right click menus in any software or on the desktop. The control key works in combination with shortcuts such as control-q etc, works in combination with clicking within applications (constrains proportions in the GIMP, opens link in new tab in Firefox), but never creates a menu.

I did wonder if it related to the touchpad at first, as being on a Macbook (2,1 64-bit) I control click by leaving two fingers on the pad. However it affects the control key as well.

I'm very sorry as I'm sure it'd be very useful to know, but I can't remember if control-clicking worked to begin with, to be narrowed down to something I've done, so there's a chance that it's been that way since install.

I'll do my best to provide logs and information for you, I am however a complete "newbie" to Linux.

Thank you so much in advance, enjoying Mint so far!!!

EDIT1: Sorry, I only just read the "Read First" post, and am now including my 'lspci'.

Just an update that might hold big clues:

Keyboard control-key and touchpad gesture are still unable to raise a right-click-menu; whilst keyboard retains control-key use in all other functions as before. BUT
I was using a Wacom Bamboo, and a button on the pen WAS able to raise this much missed feature!

Therefore the feature is not absent, just having input problems of some kind? I have tried everything under keyboard mapping and mouse settings that I can think to.

Thanks.

I am not familiar with Mac controls but to check what input devices X sees run this in terminal, paste the relevant parts back here:

Code: Select all

xinput list
HERE is an Ubuntu wiki page about configuring input devices.

I'm sorry, but I didn't get very far with the link. I was able to xinput query devices, but not any further - I couldn't find what I should do to modify right-click input either.

you can try this. there is a setting under mouse settings that allows you to hold down your primary click button to activate a secondary click aka right click. might not be what your are looking for but worth a try

:D Thank you SO much! I never tried that because I thought it would act as a double-click.
I'm very grateful! I've been all over the internet and reinstalled all kinds of packages, so for lack of a solution this is a GREAT work-around. I've set the delay to short, so a second and a bit later, I've right-clicked!

Hope no-one else gets this problem, based on similar sounding problems I found it's not clear if it's an input or Nautilus problem?

I'm glad mamamia was able to provide a workaround that suits you. Because I would have led you towards keymapping applications and modifying keybindings. Stuff I have read, searched and referred to but never applied.
