Can someone recommend me an easy to use text editor? Text editor for use in terminal.
I've used text editor before and I wanted to install it, but I forgot the name. It's not vi nor vim but it looks like vi/vim interface. Only, there's a menu below listing available commands (shortcut keys). vi/vim don't have those. And vi/vim is not beginner friendly, well, at least not for me.
Perhaps someone knows that program.

Re: Recommend Terminal Text Editor
Well the default is leafpad on the desktop, and it can be started from the terminal, if you wished, even though it is a GUI editor, not a console (terminal) one.
And yes, nano is also good, I also have that one installed

Re: Recommend Terminal Text Editor
Thanks. This is what i've used before. Can't remember the name since most of linux package names are too hard to remember. Name doesn't makes sense to what it does.Elisa wrote:Nano ?
Re: Recommend Terminal Text Editor
"nano" is just a SI prefix meaning 10^(−9). Ever heard of nanotechnology? Anyways, nano is designed to be a light and tiny text editor, which its name reflects.
There is a variety of terminal text editors out there, vi and emacs being the most prominent. In my opinion though, nano is generally the easiest for newbies to pick up and use effectively at a pinch.

Re: Recommend Terminal Text Editor
I still think that nano is the most approachable text editor by someone who needs to use one in a terminal, in a pinch. Of course, I don't want this thread to turn into those crazy vi vs emacs debates, so my advice for the OP is to try all the text editors mentionned above, and see which one you personally prefer.
Re: Recommend Terminal Text Editor
Actually, my purpose is for me to remember what was that editor that I've used before from terminal. And i've already remembered it, nano.vincent wrote:I still think that nano is the most approachable text editor by someone who needs to use one in a terminal, in a pinch. Got no intention for a VS debates.
