In Mint 10 64bit, what would be 'startup applications' that would be safe to prevent from starting up? I am looking for a way to trim some memory usage and apps that are not needed.
Also, with mint 10, when I do a fresh install, my hard drives are showing up as sdb (OS drive) and sdc (my data drive), instead of sda and sdb? I don't have any usb drives that would be taking up sda. Just wondering why 10 is doing this. With 9, it was never an issue?
Thanks.

Re: Mint 10 Startup Applications Question
It really depends on what you use as to what you can turn off or not.....why not list your system and peripherals.
Re: Mint 10 Startup Applications Question
you can see what is taking up SDA by
and post it and we can see from there what is going on
I was initially thinking it could be your Rom Drive.
Code: Select all
sudo lshw -C disk

Re: Mint 10 Startup Applications Question
Willie, here is the output of the command you wanted me to run. Just so you are aware, I am booting Mint 10 from a USB stick. Also, SDD - SDG is a internal card reader. Disk 0 is what I am wanting to have as sda and Disk 1 as sdb.
mint@mint ~ $ sudo lshw -c disk

Re: Mint 10 Startup Applications Question
By what I can gather but my research the SDA,B,C and so on are set by the position on the mainboard. If you want to change the order the way they show up as for the Disk that you are wanting to be SDA then what you will need to do is rearrange the way they are connected to the board. By what I have read you will need to set it up this way.
Primary Master-sda
primary Slave-sdb
secondary master-sbc
secondary slave -sdd
In you case it looks like you might be using Sata hard drives.
So you will want to hook it up very much like above
Primary master(Sata port 1- sda)
primary Slave (Sata port 2-sdb)
secondary master(Sata port 3-sbc)
secondary slave (Sata Port 4-sdd)
according to my research that should work.

hope this has helped some....
