volume buttons not working

Postby kwagster on Sun Oct 07, 2007 11:49 pm

the volume buttons on the laptop don't work.
the little popup screen shows up proving it registered but the volume doesn't change whether i mute it or just make it lower.
it did work for a bit but i got an error message (knotify i think).

can someone make me happy

edit: ok. changing the master volume does nothing but changing the headphones volume does.
what's going on?

Please clarify, you write
the volume buttons on the laptop
To me this is the "hardware buttons"
But you mean the software controls?
Open everything connected to sound and check settings - it's not uncommon that some setting is wrong or unused
Double clicking the volume control by the clock brings up a more "detailed" view among other things
Also what I read in your edit suggests a possible misconfiguration....

sorry for the slow reply.

ok heres some more detail:

when i open the volume control, i can adjust the volume using "PCM" and "headphone" but the main volume does nothing.

also i just noticed that the main volume influences the laptop speakers perfectly fine. it wasn't always like this either. i reformatted after trying out a different distro (big mistake) and ever since then it has been all wierd.

So if I understand you right it's the volume for external speakers that don't work?
You haven't connected to "Line out" have you?

they work.
the volume buttons dont change the volume.
i can change the volume by adjusting the PCM and Headphones buttons but it does not change with the main mix

also, on a totally unrelated note, my cube stopped working (without me adjusting any settings)...
my computer is breaking apart!

ouch!
I was thinking that you may have connected the external speakers to line out and then the master control will not change the volume I think - thats only in speaker out
I may be wrong...

bah...
it all started when my computer froze and i had to hard restart. since then everything (from beryl to this) is not working well... i have frequent freezes now and its annoying me.

anyways, the slot i'm connected to is the only "headphone" slot there is on the computer. it works, just the main volume doesn't change anything.
