nVidia screen resolution returns to default on reboot

Hi,
Obvious newbie here, I have the following issue that I would like help with please:
Having installed the nVidia driver thru ENVY and having adjusted the screen resolution from the default 1024x768 to my monitor's recommended one of 1440x900 I then save it and my session is fine. (The system is installed to my HD)
Also, when I click on the save settings to X config file, I get this message.. "Unable to remove old X config backup file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'
Then after a reboot, it has returned to the default, question is.. how can I retain the preferred resolution, without having to go into nVidia settings every time?
Help would be appreciated, preferably step by step please.

what would be helpful, is if you could post your xorg.conf file, which may offer us some more clues...

Thanks for the suggestion.. quite how do I do that?
This is my first "tinker" with linux, being an ex windows user for a million years or so

Sorted the problem.. updated xOrg config file - as follows:


First, open up a terminal. From there, type the following:

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

You might need to enter an admin's password here. You should be presented with a text window with a bunch of stuff. Ignore most of it, but look for the following:

Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

It'll appear several times throughout the file. Each time you see it, add your desired resolution (in my case, 1440x900) so that it appears like the following:

Modes "1440x900" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

(You can also add any other resolutions you'd like to support.)
