When the case is like yours it's often the sync values for the monitor that is wrong - people in general don't understand them and they have a considerable impact on things like resolution....
This is a laptop but still - check the values if you can, a rather high horizontal value is needed for the resolution you want.
It seems that the info is not always correctly reported to the video card.
Also comment out "dri" both in Section "Module" and the entire Section "DRI". This may be needed for Beryl/Compiz, but first things first.
Wide screen monitors are still fairly new and are a bit problematic
