lost sound in all modes. is there a reinstall for sound or a mute override or something. works fine in windows (dual boot) thanks

Open anything related to sound and look around. Surprisingly often something has been muted
Double click the volume control - open totem, mplayer, audacity and what else you may have
If that does not help you could try reinstalling alsa-base
If you use oss check that too
