Celena First Encounter

Postby jeffreyvergara.NET on Tue Oct 30, 2007 8:24 am

Hi, i just learned about Linux Mint 3.1 and immediately have an interest on it after I found out that ubuntu 7.10 is very slow on my machine.

PRE-Installation
First I tried Celena in VMWare and works fine.
Then I decided to actually install it in my machine.

1) Run Live CD using default options, got error
/bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off
ata#: port failed to respond
etc....

2) Run Live CD using using safe graphic options, got same error

3) Run Live CD adding:
break=top

then got:
/bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off
(initramfs)

then I typed:
> modprobe piix
> exit

Success! Linux Mint 3.1 Live CD is now running.
Installation wen smoothly without any problems

* also add
echo piix >> /etc/initramfs-tools/modules

before ending Live CD session.

POST-Installation
1) got same error after choosing kernel in grub boot menu:
/bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off
(initramfs)

I always need to type these commands to load the system
> modprobe piix
> exit

System successfully load, boot time is much faster than my previous installation of Ubuntu 7.10

2) Login Screen. Entered User & Password, it took me around 35 secs to load the desktop.
Logoff user then login again, loading time is now normal.

*I found some lines in (ctrl+alt+f1)
hdd: timeout waiting for DMA
hdd: drive not ready for comman
hdc: timeout waiting for DMA

HDD = NTFS Disk
HDC = CD Drive

I also tried updating the system/kernel but still no change.
Any views on these? Thanks in advance
Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

hi, yes I already done that but I don't know if I did it correctly.

I already have a previous partition for my WinXP so i got /dev/hda2 for my linux installation. so I used these commands:

Code: Select all
mkdir target
sudo mount /dev/hda2 target

sudo mount /dev/hda2 target/boot
sudo chroot target
echo piix >> /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
update-initramfs -u

then reboot, but still same issue. I also checked /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and piix is already there.

Code: Select all
# List of modules that you want to include in your initramfs.
#
# Syntax:  module_name [args ...]
#
# You must run update-initramfs(8) to effect this change.
#
# Examples:
#
# raid1
# sd_mod
piix

Also, I still cannot find a way to fix the login time issue.

I guess theres some hardware issue going on?
here's my hardware list I think it might be the issue

P4 2.0ghz
768ram
nvidia geforce 5200

WD 40gb primary master
DVD-RW secondary master
WD 80gb secondary slave (NTFS)

MS Wireless Comfort Keyboard (ps2)
MS Wireless Optical Mouse 2.0 (usb)
------------------------------------------------------
I think I don't have any hardware issue when I was in ubuntu, It's just the latest release becomes slower in my machine.
First Problem Solve

Postby jeffreyvergara.NET on Wed Oct 31, 2007 11:00 pm

I findly solve the boot problem, and now I can boot Celena without the break=top parameter.

I just added additional items in /etc/initramfs-tools/modules

piix
libata
pata_jmicron
ata_piix
ahci
ata_generic
ide-disk
ide-generic

Now only the Login Issue..

Oh - I've read there are problems with jmicron - but I vaguely remember they should be solved
No time to look into your Login issue now

Great! I fixed the login problem, it's a hardware configuration I suppose, I installed it before in my Secondary master, then I transferred it in primary master and now it work fine
