Hi Friends,

As a budding advocate for privacy and anonymity in this digital landscape, what are some tips, tricks, or programs for Linux 10 Julia can you recommend? I am using Firefox 3.6.13 as well. Thank you for your input! :D

Maybe it's be better say as #1st, what's the purpose...?
What u wanna hide, maybe what country r u from (due some connections are blocked and must be used bridges or other ways etc.), what brandwidth activity do u count with etc., huh?

Hi Elisa,

Thanks for responding. The purpose to enjoy my privacy (which I know realistically is becoming harder and harder these days - we can only do so much, right?). If I am to boil my thoughts, they would be in line with the Electronic Frontier Foundation to where we do not need to have our actions surveillance on the Internet in order to give advertisers our info to do what they will with it.

I want to hide my IP address (I have looked at prospective Linux open source programs yet they are lacking compared to Windows) as well as cloak my browser address because this can be seen as well (e.g. www.ipchicken.com).

On the bandwidth side, would I find this out by going to www.speedtest.net?

One thing you can do is install Tor from this site.

http://www.torproject.org/

And install Vidalia from Package Manager (a gui frontend for Tor).

Hi Aging Technogeek,

Thanks for the tip...I added more to my original post. Sorry about the delay. Any suggestions for my added comments are appreciated. I will look into Tor.

Well, the best would be to 'employ' a search engine and give him first task :D and look up 'security' stuff to get more details and to know what exactly you want...

However, for just a hiding IP, try "JanusVM" (e.g. JanusVM_07_2010.zip) / look up more details about it...

As for Tor, u can use also comfortable TorK not only vidalia etc.
TorK how-to, although not the best but quit good.

So, as 2nd I do suggest to read some stuff to know what Tor is and what is not. If you don't know these details, Tor is useless...

http://translate.google.com/translate?u ... =&ie=UTF-8
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/howto-install ... buntu.html
http://www.torproject.org/docs/debian.html.en
https://web.archive.org/web/20161101185 ... orials/TOR

Another way how to change IP, not hide ~ de facto ~ is using VPN, private or public/open etc. Or try free DNS/open DNS etc.

Another way is use anonymous/elite proxies (with FF browser is comfortable to use a cool changer "MM3" plugin/add-on).

Another way is use public http anonymizer.

There are many ways how to... The most important is to map your purpose or target activity because e.g. Tor is not good for big brandwidth (= not transferring too much/large data, like downloading/uploading tens/hundreds of GB or globally 1 GB a day etc., etc.)

There is possible also combination of gnupgpg encrypting with whatever above mentioned method or what about use some parallel nets, like darknet, freenet etc. etc.

As I said, there are many ways how to...

google sometimes sux! :x
If the above mentioned page doesn't work any more (http://translate.google.com/translate?u ... =&ie=UTF-8), just make your translation this way:

First copy the URL address of the source (make right mouse/rat etc. button click :) and choose from the context menu 'Copy Link Location'), it is: http://wiki.ubuntu.cz/Tor
Then open translation page in new tab and move there: http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en

Then in the section "Translate a web page" paste the copied URL (http://wiki.ubuntu.cz/Tor).

But as the first language do change to CZECH, pls. The second language depends on which language you want to read it in :D
Then slap the Translate button
