There are articles in the Linux Mint Wiki. The one I used when starting out and direct people to (because it is written very well) is this one:

Good luck and ask questions if you have them. :)

There is a tool called Parted Magic that you can get from Distrowatch. It's easy to use and this link
http://partedmagic.com/docs/gparted.html
to their documentation page, is a step by step guide on how to use Parted Magic to resize your existing MS partition, and add new partitions for your new Linux installation. Take a look and reply back if you still have questions. :)

Mount a partition is to "hook it up" so Linux can use it unmount (note that the command in a terminal is umount) is of course the opposite.
Gparted should work ok from the live CD, or else you can't install

Earlier advice to go to http://www.distrowatch.com is the best advice. I've never had much luck with distro supplied versions of gparted. I prefer getting Gparted, pmagic, or system rescue cd from distrowatch. This way has been less problematic for me
Also, if you're running Vista, Some extra care should be taken as Vista has a couple of partitions. I've never fooled with Vista so I don't know what precautions to take. I come across posts about this while trying to fix problems I was working on at the time. Just putting the bug in your ear so you won't mess up. :)
I dualboot Windows and Linux on a couple of my machines and it's easier than it sounds.

Good Luck.
