GRUB Error 17 (solved)

Postby sticknam50392 on Tue Nov 27, 2007 6:04 pm

Hello.
I recently partitioned my hard drive so that I could dual-boot Windows Vista and Linux Mint (Vista installed first).
After using Mint for a few days, I decided that I didn't want it on my computer any more, and so I cleared the partition that I had made for Mint through Vista (leaving me with about 10GB of free space).
Now that that's done, I can no longer load my computer.
It'll turn on and then go into GRUB, then display Error 17.
Help?
Thank you. :D

PS. I have no idea what GRUB Error 17 is.

Grub is the Linux bootloader. It overwrites the Windows MBR(master boot record).

If you have a Windows install DVD: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392

If not, you could do a temporary install of Mint (again) to be able to boot into Windows and fix it from there. Then reboot to make sure, and delete the Mint partition. You can restore the Windows bootloader from within Windows with EasyBCD: http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBCD/R ... th+EasyBCD

Ooh. Thanks.
I decided to just re-install Mint.
The only problems I really had with it were that I couldn't get Compiz to work (which I managed to do now) and that sound wouldn't work.
Still no idea what to do about the sound, any suggestions?

Post your computer model/hardware specs. I'm sure someone can get you going.

Uhh..I have an HP Pavilion 6500t?
Hopefully that's enough? Because I don't know that much about computers. Haha...

Open a terminal window, type in
Code: Select all
lspci
and copy/paste here. This will read all the pci devices on your system. Hopefully your sound card will be listed. That is a good place to start.

Is this a grub error post or a sound problem? You had a sound problem post here:

The link provided by JohnH appears to cover this post. True?
