Check for updates is disabled as you need to be root in order to update Firefox and running Firefox as root is just stupid.

OK, as for Firefox, clem (the head guy of Mint basically) is waiting for Firefox 2.0.0.9 to hit the Ubuntu repos (it still hasn't) before he updates it. Dunno why, but no real way around it.

As for Wine, since you're getting it from the Ubuntu repos, those have been closed to updates for well over a month now so no new updates hit, you've either got to find a 3rd party apt repo or a .deb file of the latest wine release if you want it.

for wine, go to winehq.org. they have a page there that has the info on what repo to add to synaptics, and then what commands to enter into the terminal to get the latest version installed.

in fact, here's a link:
http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb

firefox 2.0.0.10 should hit the repositories shortly and we might see skype 2.0 beta as well.
