Don't know about your problem, but there are issues with Automatix
Besides Screem is in Synaptic (Package Manager) so using Automatix was unnecessary and may be the cause.
Try to remove it (completely) and then reinstall it with Synaptic
Screem is crashing!

I have not found much but it may have something to do with KDE and gnome
I believe Screem is KDE and it may not be happy with gnome, although most applications can work in either
