wifi works from live CD - not from install

Postby schnardski on Sat Dec 15, 2007 4:57 pm

The live CD of Daryna works excellently with my EeePc... I had to install Windows drivers for wifi to work. This is the only Linux distribution I've yet found that interfaces correctly with the native 800x480 screen. However, this same process does not work for enabling wifi after installing Daryna. Any suggestions?

It could be very useful if you could tell us your wireless card. Open a terminal, then type in this command:
Code: Select all
lspci | grep Network

Then post the output here. Please use copy and paste so we don't have any spelling errors.

There isn't any output from that command.

Device Manager shows it as:

Atheros Communications, Inc.

AR5006EG 80211 b/g Wireless PCI Express Adapter

Could you post your entire out put of:
Code: Select all
lspci

then?
Or you could try searching at madwifi.org. I have no previous experience with Atheros cards, but it seems that it supports your card.

01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5006EG 802.11 b/g Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)

It is listed as ethernet controller, while I think it should be Network controller, but I am not sure about that though. Also, it should be supported by the madwifi driver, are you sure you don't have it installed?
Try:
Code: Select all
lsmod | grep madwifi

or just
Code: Select all
lsmod

and see if madwifi is loaded.

Also, thank you very much for your time and input.

One thing I noticed is that when I performed the installation, The "Restricted Drivers Manager" install a driver. I've tried disabling it with no different result.

I am not sure what is wrong. I found this where they were unable to get the wifi working with Gutsy. I also saw a post in another forum, where one has uploaded a patch for the driver for kernel 2.6.23, and for kernel 2.6.21 & 22. I have no idea on how to install them, maybe a guru could look over them and give you some hints. You could also take a look at eeeuser.com.

I've reinstalled Mint from the flash card and reinstalled the Windows Atheros driver which is working fine... I'm using it now. I ran lsmod again with it working to see what the difference was and it appears Mint is installing another wlan driver (ath_pci) that is not being installed by the live CD. From what I've been able to read, perhaps I need to blacklist the other driver. I'm new to Linux so I'm drawing a blank on how to accomplish this.

Here are the results of running lsmod with the wlan adapter working:

Problem solved. I blacklisted ath_pci, disabled the Atheros hardware access layer from the Restricted Drivers Manager, removed and reinstalled the windows driver from the Eee PC XP drivers disk, and the wireless device became visible from the network manager and configured easily. This is the only Linux distribution I've been able to get audio, video, and wireless working properly on the Eee PC, as well as dual booting XP from the internal SSD and Linux from the internal SD slot.

Linux Mint reigns supreme!

Glad I found this.

Running Mint live cd on my Eee PC as well.

Would like to install it without wiping out the default install.

What size SD card are you using for Mint ?

I only have a 2GB SD card ...
