Sometimes I boot into Linux Mint before I turn on my ADSL modem. After turning it on how do I get LM to connect to the internet without re-booting? Been reading forums but I haven't been able to determine what commands I need to type into terminal. Most of what I found was dealing with something more complicated than my simple question.
I know most people don't turn off their modems but I don't trust a UPS to protect my system from lightning.

Is the modem connected through USB or Ethernet?
