The title said it all... I have an HP dv2125nr laptop with an on board HDA Nvidia sound card. I did check the ALSA mixer and the only bar set to 0 is the one labeled IEC958 and alsamixer is not letting me change it. When it worked, it did so incredibly well, including the mute button on my laptop and disabling the speakers when I plugged something in the line out port.

The interesting thing is that the sound used to work and I did not touch the configuration in any way that I'm aware of; actually the only thing that I did to the system was installing the upgrades and a few reboots.

The system is a dual boot with windows XP MCE and I frequently swap between the two; I seem to remember that the last time the audio worked was when I plugged the laptop to a TV to play a movie; then I might have rebooted to win or turned it off before having removed the cables. (don't know if it could matter, but I'll put it there).

If anybody has any idea about where to look I'd be incredibly grateful! I have some audio editing to do and it's a bit... hard to get it done as is.

Do you have the option to choose another device when you right-click the sound icon on the panel? I've got realtek sound hardware, but linux always gives me the option of using the built in intel devices that are on my mobo. Try that out....

I have the same laptop and the same setup. XP MCE on a small partition. I have also experienced the no sound issue. If I find a fix I will post it here.

Have you gotten your wireless working?

My sound came back... and then failed again
I still have no idea about what could cause that...

Ok, I think i have narrowed it down to one of two options.

This usually occurs when I have had to use XP briefly. So I think that

a) Xp somehow messes with the Bios in some way (unlikely)

b) I had this problem last night after using XP. After about 15 min of xp usage. There was no sound. I put a fan on the laptop and let it cool the laptop for about 5 min. Came back and it worked fine. I wonder if the load on the sound device with xp creates some problem. Not sure. Just a wild guess.

Don't think so... the first time I experienced the problem the computer had been turned off for hours.
I'll give it a try though.

Hi!

I am having exactly the same problems... i just installed Mint and sound worked out of the box. then i did system updates, and after reboot the sound was gone!

btw, Mint is the on OS at the moment. so XP cant be the problem...

weird... i did another reboot (3rd since the sound vanished) and now the sound is back...
i went to bios to check if there is anything to adjust, but couldnt find anything...

i just hope that sound will stay...

btw... i am really really loving Mint! i started using Linux only a week ago, tried a couple of distros, but Mint seems to be the right for me...

next thing is to figure out how to install Photoshop CS2 via Wine - actually i havent found any advice on installing software to wine... should i just drag the files somewhere or what??

CS2 is on the WineHQ platinum list, and if you haven't run across this site (I found this site while looking around for help on running other programs in wine):

Looks easy:
Type wine /pathtocdrom/setup.exe to install Photoshop.
Type wine photoshop.exe in the installation directory to run Photoshop.
