var/cache disk space wasted

Can you delete the contents of var/cache safely? what is it for and what are the implications of deleting its contents? I only have 5.6mb hd that is more than half full, so any space I can free up will be an advantage. Unfortunately I use this small hd for photo editing resulting in disk space being a critical problem for me. Any ideas or suggestions on how to free space would be useful.

For apt cache just run these commands:

sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo apt-get clean

Thanks for the info. By cleaning out the var/cache and ShowFoto debris I have managed to claw back 600mb of disk space and now have 2.7gb free. So shall I install some more photo editing software (or not) I have Gimp and ShowFoto installed
