MintBackup released in Romeo

Thought I'd have a go:

located sources.list, opened with Gedit - shows Romeo as unverified source for Celena, so presume it is available.

Ran: $ apt update - no mention of MintBackup

How do I make Romeo available?

Thanks NewW2 - I followed Clem's procedure adding a line to sources.list - after correcting typos the command
$ sudo apt-get update
produced output - here are the last 6 lines:
Ign http://www.linuxmint.com romeo/ Packages
Hit http://www.linuxmint.com celena/ Packages
Get: 12 http://www.linuxmint.com romeo/ Packages [2249B]

which looks as though Romeo is added.

Then I entered the command:
$ apt install mintbackup

which gave:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package mintbackup

I've just tried it again with a capital B - what's wrong?

Try Synaptic and search for it? And if you are using Celena, could that make a difference?

I also followed Clem's post but I have the same results as you above.
It was not in my Synaptic either and it shouldn't be if it is not in Apt.

Either is mintDesktop 2.0 and mintMenu 3.1, I even tried if they were case sensitive. I will be following this thread closely, seams to be working for most users but now there is at least two of us with the same negative results.

I double checked my sources.list and it was and still is saved directly from Clem's post.

Hi,

There used to be 1 Romeo.. now there are many. Basically the "new" Romeo repository (it's been there since the release of Daryna) works with a different section for each release. So to speak, there isn't a "Romeo repository", there is a "Romeo repository for Daryna", a "Romeo repository for Elyssa"..etc.

mintBackup was released in Romeo, ie. it was released in Romeo in the section corresponding to the current release:

--> deb http://www.linuxmint.com/repository romeo daryna

The reason your sources.list actually work with the old romeo repository (deb http://www.linuxmint.com/repository romeo/) is because we didn't want to break things for Celena/Cassandra users... no new packages are going in there though.

Not at all. It should work fine in Cassandra. I'm just saying you're not pointing at the Daryna section of Romeo, in which it was released.

Thanks Clem - but in your post, quoted above by NewW2m, you advised adding a line to sources.list - which we did, but then mintBackup was not found by apt install.

Do we now understand that somehow a different Romeo needs to be added to the Celena (or Cassandra) sources.list? How?

Glad to hear it. Sorry I missed that (daryna) on the first post. Visual closure is a wonderful when it comes to art and Escher made cool art based on that fact. However, it (visual closure) can be the bane when it comes to s/w and / or reviewing your own writing.

Thanks again - now mintBackup is listed in my Synaptic Package Manager.
I clicked on it in the Celena 'Start' menu, where it appears among 'All applications', and tried to run a backup - including hidden files .Mozilla and .Mozilla Thunderbird, .tomboy and .tomboy.log. Exclude Network appears to be a default setting; I accepted that.

After about 10 minutes I see a message box:

An error occurred during the backup: tar cvWf mintbackup_home.tar --exclude='Network' * .mozilla .mozilla-thunderbird .tomboy .tomboy.log --> 256.

What's gone wrong?
I believe it should create a backup somewhere on the system disk, for subsequent removal to external storage? What filename will the backup have?
There is no facility to select a destination for mintBackup. Perhaps that will follow?

A day later - I've just tried again - smaller backup - I omitted .tomboy and .tomboy.log - precisely the same message:

Now, the terminal verifies that it is installed (but with lower-case b): according to Linux Documentation Project, in dpkg, "ii" means installed.

but it is listed in the Celena Start menu with upper-case B. (see Status,Err: above).
In the Control Centre it is listed under System, again with upper-case B. Is this the cause of the trouble?
In Linux Mint Forums Announcements it appears with B.

When it does work, please, where do I look for the backup file - with what name?

Hi,

It's installed fine on your system. The error message indicates there's something wrong with the tar process (when mintBackup archives your files). Check to see if you have enough space....

My home folder "theo" has 10.4 GB of free space. I looked through it carefully and found among the independent (i.e. not in folders) files at the end of the list, one named: mintbackup_home.tar, timestamped late last night. 1.6 GB, compression ratio 1.0.

I double-clicked on it and it opened in Archive Manager showing some of the folders in my home folder, including .mozilla and .mozilla-thunderbird (which I had selected) and all of the "undotted" folders (which I hadn't). I could view the contents of the folders - apparently completely backed up. It also includes a single file: nautilus-debug-log.txt (3.1 MB).

Its location after opening is shown as /.

Presumably it had over-written the folder created the previous evening, when I had also selected .tomboy and .tomboy-log.

So - what is the meaning of the error report? Obviously if it is to be used as a backup, it needs to be moved elsewhere.

I've been reading your blog: you ARE busy! Presumably one of the jobs waiting is writing a Manual for mintbackup?
