Resizing partitions

Postby kanodi on Sat Jan 26, 2008 11:15 pm

Hi all!
So I recently thought I would give Linux a try, and decided on mint(it just looked appealing), I resized my windows partition to make room for it. At the moment I have 20gig for mint and 160gig for windows.
And now I think I love linux lol, I would like more space, is there a 'safe' way too resize the partitions to get me more space for mint and less for windows? and if so how would i go about this? what are my options?

Thanks.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Hi kanodi, and welcome to the Mint community !

Yes, resizing usually works well, but do a back-up of your Windows important files first....pictures, music, data ect.

I would recommend using gparted, gparted-livecd-0.3.4-11 is the latest version.
http://gparted-livecd.tuxfamily.org/

Download it here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=173828

Besure to read the documentation:
http://gparted-livecd.tuxfamily.org/documentation.php

And then post back if you should have any other question or problems and someone will help you.

regards,

also, it is always a good idea to defragment your windows partition before resizing it!
this will reduce the chances of data loss on the windows partition.

Just to let you know gparted worked like a dream :) .. I now have lots and lots of space on my mint partition. The process was very nice and easy to use, thanks to gparted!
