Question about Similarities with ubuntu

Postby kasun on Mon Jan 28, 2008 6:10 pm

Hi! :D
I am planing on switching to Linux Mint from Ubuntu Gusty. One major reason is Gusty rather poor internet speeds due to the IPv6 support and some DNS problems. This problem didn't exist in Feisty Fawn. I am totally new to Linux mint and not sure is this is true, I've heard that Dryana is similar to Gusty and Celena is similar to Feisty. So would I experience the internet issues I had with Gusty if I installed Dryana? If so I might install Celena?

Thanks in advance!

In Daryna, Ipv6 is disabled by default to prevent internet problems. Also, mint comes with a series of wireless drivers, and a handy GUI to use your window's ones.

Ah thanks. Knowing that is a relief. Also out of interest..when it comes to adding sources for the apt-get list, can I add both feisty and gusty repos or just gusty or none?

Only the Gutsy ones, trying to use the Feisty repos would create problems, just like trying to use Feisty repos with Gutsy, 2 dif architectures, so you would have issues.

hm just a side note... it's interesting how many ubuntu users search for asylum here...
I don't know how this happens, but mint seems to grow every day a little more...

You can also just blacklist ipv6 module in Ubuntu, though:
Code: Select all
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

Just add
# Disable IPv6 support
blacklist ipv6

Then reboot. However, switching to Mint gives a whole new experience, so.... :)

...and, Linux Mint looks much, much, much nicer than Ubuntu Linux by default. Someone over there needs to get off the garish brown / orange kick.
