Newbie questions about Mint 12 on a Thinkpad.

Postby suns on Mon Jan 02, 2012 10:24 am

Hello everyone!
This is my first post and it will be about Mint 12 "compatibility" with my laptop.

This is the first linux distro I've tried on my X200s, but I've been using linux on my desktop for quite a while now.

My first question regards HDAPS, and it's daemon. I am not sure if it's launched at boot or not, and I'd like to check. And if it isn't, then where/how do I add it to the list of daemons launched at boot ?

And how do I disable bluetooth at boot ? I don't want to switch it off manually every time I boot the laptop.

The backlight changes too quickly, I'd want to regulate it a bit more precisely than 0-20-40-60-80-100%. Another thing is that when it is set to it's lowest, it looks as if only the left part of the screen is turned off. Even when using moderate backlight levels, there is backlight isn't exactly uniformal, with a noticeable bias towards the right half of the screen.

And coming from ubuntu 10,04, I thought I could run MATE desktop envirnoment without any problems, yet it proved to be quite difficult to get simple things working. Compiz itself worked, but I couldn't get certain features to work. I couldn't find/install the right lm-sensors applet, the same with cpu-freq applet. And of course, I can't make it suspend itself after I close the lid in MATE. Are there any analog applets in gnome3 ?

The last question I have is about power consumption. I've installed a kernel which is "patched" for the ACPI shenanigans, is there any other way I could try and conserve power ? How can I control the cpu fan ? Seems like it's on 100% all of the time. Are there any tools for battery management?

Thank you for reading through all of my stupid questions and I hope you understood my engrish.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I have the same issue with the backlight/brightness control. It changes in two steps ie. double increment. Anyone have a solution to that?

C'mon, I've made 3 topics and I haven't had a single productive reply on any of my questions. I enjoy using mint, but there are some minor bugs which make my life heck of a lot less productive. It seriously bugs me.

I guess you have mate-power-backlight-helper. Do you have xbacklight installed?

Code: Select all
apt-cache search lm sensors

Code: Select all
apt-cache search cpu freq

I only know fancontrol and thinkfan

I don't know what you mean with management but there's a new tool from MATE: mate-power-statistics
