I have an external usb drive that I am listed as owner but root is listed as group. Please somebody tell me how I can become group. I have opened it in nautilus and it won't let me change group. When I change it in menu it changes it back and says I do not have permission to change it. There has got to be a way to use my own file , folders , drives like I want. What is the deal with this crap. I have opened it as root , but I am owner so I can't do it there either.

This worked for my external usb hdd:
chmod -R -v 777 /mnt/sdb
Replace /mnt/sdb with your device.
