Ubuntu -> Mint

Hi,

I'm an unhappy owner of Dell 1720. There's a lot of things that suck about this laptop, but the main one is ipw3459 wireless driver - my Ubuntu 7.10 crashes randomly something like once or twice a day (sometimes I'm able to reboot, sometimes just gotta pull the plug, cause even Raising Skinny Elephants doesn't help).

Anyways, I'm looking for some other distro, preferably a descendant of Debian. Two questions:
* what's the chance that mint will have different drivers (that don't crash)?
* is it possible to dist-upgrade from Ubuntu 7.10?

1. Zero to none. However, the ipw3459 should be pretty stable, it might be something else that makes Ubuntu crash.
2. Nope. Mint forked from Edge (?), and since that have been an independent distro. Only way to switch is a clean install!

A clean install might be a good thing anyway, with all the plug pulling you been doing. Someone around here posted some good (safer) alternatives to plug pulling.
