Odd sound problem. solved

When i install mint my sound works fine. Once I start updating my sound goes away. I'm not sure what breaks the sound but the only way to fix it is to reinstall mint.

Without knowing version, edition and hardware it's simply not possible to give some specific advice.
You say updating, update one thing at a time only and when sound breaks you know what caused it - a bit painstaking I know

the only way i know how to get my sound back is to reformat...... I really don't want to do that.

We need a roll back tool for updates like Restore points (is that what they are called?) on Windows

i have reformatted and installed updates. I excluded kernel and compiz update and everything is working fine.

I had something like that happen to me back in the day when I was using Ubuntu. But it's only happened once. No clue what caused it.
