However, getting Dr Java to function properly was much more of a grueling task. I had to point it to the tools.jar file that was downloaded with JDK 5.0 manualy and typing java -jar into was not enough it turns out. This would open DrJava with Java 6.0 and that created all kind of trouble. I had to right click on the icon on my desktop, then select to open with Java 5.0 and then everything worked properly. A little more work than I had anticipated, but I learned quite a bit in the process.
