You find aMSN in the software portal
Gaim is now called pidgin which is installed by default
and you're on the right track with apt-get

Code: Select all
apt install  amsn

Though Pidgin is more versatile...

Note that apt install is a Mint tweak of apt-get

You might try Emesene. I've found it better suited to MSN based IM than Pidgin or AMSN.
If you wanna give it a try add it to your repositories, open a terminal:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Then add

deb http://apt.emesene.org/ ./
deb-src http://apt.emesene.org/ ./

to your list at the end, save and exit.

Go to synaptic, update, and find emesene & install
or apt-get update, apt-get install emsesne from terminal

Cheers.

I prefer Pidgin or Gaim over aMSN anyday. aMSN has given me lots of problems before but really it is upto what you like.

But I prefer aptitude, should be a tweak of that as well.
As for the difference between Pidgin and aMSN is that aMSN is just a MSN clone, offers much of the same features that MSN offers, but I find it both slow and ugly, Pidgin is much more versatile, provides support for Yahoo, MSN, AIM, Google Talk, ICQ, IRC etc etc, and is included when installing Mint, but does not offer video and sound chat. I prefer Pidgin though, never used either video or sound chat, for that I would use better software than MSN (etc) anyway....
