How To Install New Programs?

Postby seattlelion on Tue Oct 13, 2009 11:41 pm

I'm new at using Linux and need the step by step how to install programs from the INTERNET. I can download them; but I don't know how to get them to install before or after I unzip them. Isn't their a simple way to get the new programs I bring in to install through the Software Manager MintInstall? I know there are programs already there to install; but the new ones that didn't come with the operating system are the ones I can't get to install. I would appreciate it and be thankful is someone here could write me out a step by step on how to accomplish the new install programs that come zipped from the INTERNET.

1) use mintInstall. If the software you require is not there use:
2) Package Manager. Use the search bar to find the software you need and install it with one click. If not in Package Manager:
3) search the Internet for a Ubuntu (Debian .deb) package of the software you require. Download it to your download folder. Open a terminal. Navigate to the download folder with "cd". Then type: "sudo dpkg -i nameofpackage.deb"

Tell us what you actually want to install and we can help.

What is the difference between mintinstall and package manager? I've just been using the package manager. Thanks

Why don't you just run both of them yourself and notice the differences?

I have and found that I preferred the package manager. I'm not sure what the actual differences are though. I've got everything I need (mostly libraries) from the package manager and also from installing from source.

saeed the problem you're having is that's a windows progam linux does not support .exe files since oracle is listed in the name is it a database or what? Look in the repo's in software manager also check package manager that would be the best way for someone new to linux to install anything.
