Yes Ram is your problem, in the wiki it suggests a minimum of 512mb but I have had it running with 384mb. (gnome version). You could try the XFCE version.

Now, that's worth knowing, most distros still run on 256Mb.

The min recommended ram for Ubuntu is 384mb but lower if you run Xubuntu which I believe has a rec. min. of 256mb but will run on less.
