connection speed limit semi solved

Post by Foz »

I am running Linux Mint, Elyssa on two machines and having the same problem on both.
The wireless internet connection is very slow.
This machine is dual booted with Win XP where wireless works fine. It also works when wired.
This machine uses a Belkin /02.11g card and the other a second hand one that says Edimax. Both are PCI cards.

From here I get the same results on both PC's.
lspci says they are RaLink RT2500 802.11g Cardbus/mini-PCI (rev 01) and mintwifi adds PCI ID = 1814:0201 (rev 01)
Elsewhere on the forums it is stated this is supported by Mint. Although the network is detected and does work, speeds are extremely low (<200kbs) for a 20Mbs connection.
connection information states: interface 802.00 WiFi (wlan0), speed 1Mb/s, driver rt2500pci
When I run network tools from the menu it gives the same info (including 1meg speed). But if I press the configure button it says the connection (wlan0) does not exist.

Is this likely to be a driver problem or have a missed something more basic?
Any help received gratefully.

Fantastic, problem solved.
Thanks for the help.

I had a shuftie at the man iwconfig page, it said most cards defaulted to auto, so I set it to auto but nothing happened, then I set it to 50M as I like round numbers, that generated an error. Since you suggested 11M I tried that, and it liked it. I thought 11M seemed an odd number to just pick so I tried the 11g standard of 54M and it likes that to. I justed installed Opera in less than a minute!
I am really enjoying the functionality of the command line, but there is just so much to learn.

50M as I like round numbers, that generated an error
That's because there is no standard set to that speed - these numbers are aliases for b g n etc...

Did I say problem solved.
That's 'cos I didn't realise changes made using iwconfig, or ifconfig are not persistent and that after every user change or shutdown we're back to 1Mbs.
This means I must find where the card is configured at boot or login and make the change there.
Any suggestions?
I've looked in /etc/network/ but none of the files there seemed helpful, but since I'm new to both scripting and the FHS that's not too surprising.
Incidentally, network manager in the mint menu still won't recognise wlan0. Is this a common problem?

I cant understand why changes in iwconfig are not persistent and I've not found any real solution
One way of doing it would be to have a script that runs iwconfig at boot

First off, a big thankyou to both Husse and Mr. Blue for your help.
I'm sorry for the delays between postings, I have a lot of demands on my time right now.
One of these is Cisco's, IT Essentials, network operating systems course. This is what sparked my inerest in Linux. Though for some reason it will not allow me to log in using Elyssa.
I have not been able to solve my problems, but I have found a work around in Daryna. It runs at the right speed and allows me to learn about Linux on a Linux machine (which is much easier than running upstairs every ten minutes).
This is not a good solution but at the moment, needs must. When I have more time and hopefully, better skills I shall return to the subject.
'till then
adios
Jon.
