Install "Grokking the Gimp" through synaptic.

I use to use Gimp but have started using Inkscape and now prefer it over Gimp.
It has tons tutorials built in with step by step instructions.
I ended up finding a website for video tutorials here http://screencasters.heathenx.org/

For Gimp I found this site that has podcasts for you to watch.
