There have been problems with some Asus chipsets and Linux. Do you know what chipset this machine has?

You may try upgrading the BIOS. It will probably improve your chance in installing Mint on your laptop.
I tried similar attempt with an AMD machine back then, and it did show a little improvement. I couldn't get the installer to run at all before the upgrade, and could afterwards but got stuck at step 2/7.
One thing for sure, it won't bring you any harm.
Edit: Have you tried the XFCE version? The problem I explained above occured when I tried the Main version. The XFCE one installs and runs smoothly on the AMD machine.
