Re: The status of Mint Fluxbox CE

Postby shane on Thu Jun 19, 2008 6:59 pm

It has been a while since i got i posted here... i am still working on mintFB CE... although the pace has slowed down a bit thanks to Euro 2008... but since my home team, Romania, has made an early exit i think i can dedicate more time to MintFB... :)

most of the problems that were there so far have been ironed out... but i am working with merlwiz79 of Mint XFCE CE to add more features to the distro... and this means more testing and debugging so maybe a public beta maybe longer down the line than i expected... but i will continue working on it.

a major problem i had with firefox not recognizing file types has been sorted out as far as my testing can prove... the problem with the menu not recognizing language settings and menu icons still persists... and localization seems to be a major advancement and priority with Linux Mint Elyssa... which also means that I have to reach the Mint standard before I can release a public beta under the Mint brand... I completely understand this.

Since no one with python experience has come up to fix the issue with the menu... i have started building the menu app from scratch in bash scripts... since that is all i know. i must say that i have learned a lot about bash scripting while doing this. still i am convinced that what i have done so far is not as good as it can be... in bash or otherwise... for one, the bash scripts work much slower than python... but i have got it to detect the correct icons for all but a few applications... and localizations work well for different languages where translations are available... the scripts generate the menu structure correctly... in the respective languages...

i have yet to get it to generate the complete menu... and to get it to update the menu automatically when applications are installed or uninstalled... while dealing with a thing we call 'real life' :D

anyway... if i do not have the new menu ready, we might release a public beta with the old python menu and have the new one as an upgrade or reserve it for the next MintFB release.

Anyway, as time permits i tread along hopefully, trying to get this release out.

cheers.

I should have realized before and this is just a suggestion but that version is pretty dated. You might consider this version for our needs if it will speed things along. Below is the link to the version I have been using on another system.

Thanks,

It's being tested by Clem and he will decide if/when to release the 1st beta.

I've had a pretty good experience just using the upgrade path to get in sync with Elyssa release following the information on the release page. The only thing that remained broken that I am aware of is Flash because of the problems with using Firefox 3.0. That was last month and I haven't tried this month. A couple of hours downloading and answered a few questions and I had a fresh current system with updated kernel and everything. Pretty slick! So if you are happy with your current arrangement but want to run Elyssa, most everything you want to know is on this page.

Upgrade your packages

Open a terminal and type the following commands:

* apt update
* apt upgrade
* apt dist-upgrade

Repeat the three commands above until the output says for both upgrade and dist-upgrade that there is nothing to upgrade to.

SKIP Install additional software (didn't feel I needed any of it for a Fluxbox laptop)

Then I farted around with this for a while but nothing came of it because of known issues with Firefox 3.0 and flash, that was it. So far so good no other known issues. Have fun!

Run the following commands:

* apt-get remove --purge flashplugin-nonfree libflashsupport
* apt-get install nspluginwrapper
* apt-get install libflashsupport
* apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

It's using the old version.
The new version hasn't been added to the Hardy repos and I'm not sure when it will.

Please disregard, the RC1 version came out the day after I posted this. With this method you would not have the opportunity to readjust all your settings and get used to the new applications.

That is the link to the thread where issues concerning the RC are being discussed. I will post a response there to keep everything in one place.

So what is the 'correct' path to upgrade? I have run debian, redhat, centos, etc (even ubuntu) and there has tended to be a guide. If I am using 4 flux how to upgrade to 5 'correctly'?

Is it as you suggested, simply changing repos? It would seem not as you said "Please Disregard" . . . so then what method should be taken?

Thanks

Unfortunately, there is no correct way to upgrade from Mint 4 Fluxbox. Although the upgrading of the base Ubuntu packages should be the same as upgrading any other Ubuntu based distro, there have been quite a few changes in the way Fluxbox and other Mint specific apps work. Not to mention that Mint 4 FB is more a trimmed down Mint 4 XFCE, whereas Mint 5 FB is built up from Ubuntu 8.04 minimal install... so that might cause other problems. Then there's also the fact that AFAIK the Mint 5 FB specific packages have not yet been included in the Mint repos...

In short, there are too many changes and variables to guarantee a clean and fool proof way to upgrade. A clean install is the recommended way to go. You could try ShadeTree's method, but you won't be getting the Mint 5 FB features.

Okay - well let me ask this - is a full release planned? One that is polished/finished? My understanding is that the Flux4 version I am running was never actually 'completed'
