100% Processor

Post by Wic »

Hello,

I'm experiencing some trouble with my proc under Daryna. I've got an old Pentium 4 3.6 GHz, working quite hard and with a noisy fan. Under Windows XP, a few minutes aftre the system has booted, the processor is quite low, with the fan even not working. Under Mint, I've got the proc working hard all the time (100%), wich is annoying (noise) and worrying (for the fan's life)...

I've tried this (http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/cpu-frequtils in french sorry) to adjust the CPU usage with cpu-frequtils, but it's still the same...

Any idea ? Should I go under Elyssa ?

Thanks,

Wic

I can add that no process seems to eat all the CPU ressources. I've tried Mint Live CD (Elyssa 5 & KDE Beta) and my CPU usage is quite normal...

Run "top" in a terminal to find which processes are using the cpu. Then report back, we may be able to sort you out.

I've done a "top" in terminal. The result :

4941 root 25 0 12352 9724 620 R 76 0.3 71:21.91 mount.ntfs
6277 root 15 0 36172 33m 1000 S 22 1.1 17:12.83 gam_server
5882 root 16 0 630m 100m 14m R 8 3.3 4:17.56 Xorg
6656 christop 22 7 148m 73m 9476 S 3 2.4 13:35.67 beagled
15940 root 15 0 8744 1780 1336 S 1 0.1 0:00.03 fusesmb.cache

Looks like the problem could come from the NTFS driver ? I've a dual boot with XP, although I've nearly stopped to use XP, my drives were NTFS formatted by that time...

Thanks for any advice,

Wic

this problem has been around for some time. why it occurs only on a few installations, usually intermittently, seems to be poorly understood.

fortunately, the solution is dead simple, just a line or two in a control file (which may be why no one is terribly concerned with diddling though the otherwise solid code...). for a step-by-step see here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? ... gam+server

the only thing i would add is that you may want to add a line for "fat16", since flash devices use it.
