Linux Mint 5 x64 released!

Hi

I have downloaded and installed this and I'm very pleased I was able to get my MX5000 Logitech to work with the old config
data,.. all seemed to be well till my windows started to open with no title bar and dump in top left hand corner,.. there is no place to click to move them and no min max etc,.. not sure why this started at all

This sounds like a Compiz issue. Check your compiz window decorator (whether it's using emerald or not). If you can't fix it, turn off compiz.

I have seen similar too. You have the task bar at the bottom showing open windows, right? Click on the name of the offending window, it will minimize. Click it again to maximize it and all the buttons will reappear. You can do this very fast, if you want.

I had posted earlier about the start menu not disappearing automatically after clicking a menu item and the shut down menu not coming up until I click outside the menu - you suggested Compiz was the culprit. I now have Compiz disabled and it is still doing it. Can you think of any other issues that would cause this behavior?

I can't boot. I keep getting stuck at INITRAMFS. I've tried using IRQPOLL & ACPI=OFF, IRQPOLL. Neither allows me to boot the OS.

My system is:

CPU: Yorkfield/XE
Motherboard: DFI P45-T2RS Plus
RAM: 4GB
HDD (Boot): 250GB SATA
Video: NVidia 7600/GT

I can successfully boot OpenSUSE 11.0 & 11.1 betas, Debian Lenny, & Ubuntu 8.10 (beta1 & beta2) from CD & HDD.

Thanks for the suggestion, Big_Dog 1968. Unfortunately, those flags did not work for me.

My machine has OpenSuse 11.0 & XP installed for dual-boot on a single HDD. Both XP & Suse are working fine. Recent live-CD's from Ubuntu variants & Debian variants are all failing to boot on this machine.

I'm attempting to boot the Mint/64 Live CD from an ASUS SATA DVD burner. I do have a PATA DVD burner as well. I'll try booting from that & report back if it works.

If there are any other suggestions for me, I'd appreciate them.

I finally managed to install it today... Was busy somewhere else...

Good stuff... What I mean is that I am not noticing this is a "different stuff"...

Fast install, business as usual... Once done, I added my regular set of apps, & non-free stuff such as Skype, Picasa, Googleearth... I removed Mono & disabled compiz...

Everything seems to work just fine... I might finally actually use a 64 bit distro for my 64 bit hardware (!!!)

I also was keen on the Fluxbox release, but I chose the 64 bit arch... I might set up a nice Fluxbox setup as a backup WM, and toy project...

-The downside ?
-I wiped my Mint Xfce partition for that (!!!)

It's all good anyway !

PS: Is it normal that the kernel is still "Linux spc1 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 12:47:45 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux" ???

On my Ubuntu partition it is -21...

This may be a dumb question but can you upgrade to the 64 edition from the i386 Community edition?

I would say No. Different set of repositories & whatnot. However you can install the 64-bit but keep your /home directory as is, assuming it was on a separate partition to begin with. This not recommended but I've done it before in other distros without any problems. But I can't say for sure in Mint's case.

I've been using Mint x64 for about a week now on my HP pavilion dv2000 laptop and haven't had any problems yet. The installation went smooth and everything worked out of the box, even my wireless.
It definitely feels much snappier. Most applications seem to load much faster, and the general feeling is of snappiness. I haven't measured boot up, hibernation or shutdown time, but they seem to be pretty much the same as compared to the main Mint 5 edtion.

I am very pleased with this edition of Mint. The main Mint 5 edition felt slow on my laptop and I was even considering going back to Arch linux because of this. But not any more.

Linux Mint is definitely the best distro I have ever used in the four years I've been using linux.

I would like to thank Clem and all the other people involved in the making of Mint. Thank you for such a great distro.

I installed OpenBox on Mint64... It's fast & light !!!

I still use Gnome/OpenBox as a main environment however... But pure OpenBox has its charm

-So what's the deal with sticking to the -16 kernel after all ???

Are you talking about transforming Mint into Ubuntu, or upgrading Mint using Ubuntu's repositories?

well mint is basically ubuntu, it uses hardy heron as the base and add bits doesnt it? so am i able to upgrade that core hardy heron part into intrepid ibex?

I think it's more correct to say that Mint is fully compatible with Ubuntu's repositories (that is, Mint 5 with Heron, Mint 6 with Intrepid and so on). It's more than just looks that seperates Mint from Ubuntu

I don't know for sure, but my guess is that an "apt-get dist-upgrade" to intrepid would f up your system...

I am attempting this right now. So far so good. I'll report back once the upgrade is finished. May be a while since the repositories are SLOW right now.

I downloaded 5x64 a couple of weeks ago. I can't get it to work with my computer. I burned it at the slowest speed on on my drive. I tried it in compatibility mode, I tried typing irqpoll. Since it was based on hardy I used the all_generic_ide floppy=off irqpoll. It gives a SquashFS error and say something about a logical block error

Just installed this today after a bit of a nightmare going from Mint 4.0 > Ubuntu 8.10 > Kubuntu 8.10 > Mandriva 2008.....Couldn't get X to work correctly with either Ubuntu and Kubuntu. I didn't like the look of Mandriva so decided to try Mint 5.0 (64 bit)

Everything is working as it should be, installed Nvidia using Envy and it's now running at the correct resolution. All the media stuff seems to be working fine, flash is working too.....Thanks you thanks you thank you

If you want intrepid that bad -- and you don't care if it kills Mint in the process -- why don't you just download and install intrepid? Any distro will tell you that a clean install is better than an upgrade anyway. And that applies even to different versions of the same distro, never mind to a different distro.

Hi everyone. I use Mint 5 x64 for a week, it's FAR BETTER than Ubuntu Hardy, feels lighter, non-bloated, elegant and clean...
I love this distro, it's the best! I started giving out CDs to all my friends, they are all very satisfied from the beautiful interface and ease of use.
And thank you all the developers out there for making it! Thanks to you, Linux Mint 5 x64 is my main desktop, and I'm almost switched from Vista (occasionally I use it for design apps not avaiable for linux - trying to solve that).
I used Mint since ver. 4, and this one is very cool.

Ah man I knew it was coming out soon, but not this soon(I know I'm way past release date). I can finally use Mint with all my ram. Thank you! Now to get another drive to install it on.

This may sound like a crazy question (?) but why is the 64 bit version of Mint, "AS QUICK AS" or "EVEN FASTER THAN" something like the XFCE 64 bit version of Sidux??? It's weird, but on this system (Core 2 Duo with 2gb DDR2) Mint 64 absolutely Flies!! It's faster than (Even using the standard Gnome) pretty much anything else that i've tried, and it's just as responsive as the lightweights that use Flux/Openbox etc.

A great distro, that just keeps getting better & better with every release, and this 64 bit version is simply the BEST!! Many thanks to the whole team..... You ROCK!!
