Dear repliers, YouTube.com leaves my screen blank, as does Brasscheck. See http://www.brasschecktv.com/page/455.html . But when the site appears, I see a black space where the movie should play in a split second before it disappears.
Before I had these troubles, I could play Flashmovies on my computer. These movies however were hindered by Realplayer software. After removing the Realplayer, the Flashmovies played very well, until recently when I got these problems.
Could it be a solution to wait till next week when an upgrade to version 8.10 will be released? Or is it better to solve this problem to prevent them from appearing in the next system version as well?

Folks, I give up. I had problems with Flash until I removed Realplayer. Then everything went fine for a few weeks, after I received an update for Flash. Since then Flash isn't working any more. I shall wait until Intrepid is available for upgrade. Perhaps that will solve the problem.

In the meantime I have found out that the Adobe file within my personal file has not been reproduced by Mint after I removed it. I removed it to get rid of the old flash version 9 stuff which could have been in the way of the proper functioning of version 10. In think that when we can let Mint reproduce this Flash file, the problem could be solved.

In case you guys that are having trouble haven't noticed, the plug-in is in the ubuntu repositories. Just search for it by name...it will even remove the nonfree plug-in for you!

dberg918 and omns thanks but the problem isn't getting the adobe flash player the problem is getting things to work right.

HermanDegenhart ok, if you want to wait for the 8.10 update I can understand that. I installed the 8.10 upgrade into Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 is still using the non-free player. I don't know if you can install the Ubuntu 8.10 upgrade into Mint. I might break something in Mint.

I checked what I have installed in Mint for flash. There's just the adobe-flashplugin 10, libflashsupport and libflashplayer.so. libflashplayer.so isn't listed in Adept so it must be installed by adobe-flashplugin 10.

This is interesting: Installing the Adobe Flash plugin on Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Hero http://discuss.itwire.com/viewtopic.php ... 55&p=27687

Dear Folks, In response to the page: http://discuss.itwire.com/viewtopic.php ... 55&p=27687 I went back to flashplugin 9 nonfree and libflashsupport. I could not find libflashplayer.so either and don't know how to get it. It didn't work. Flash movies like You Tube are still not playing on my computer, while they have done so. I have also noticed that Mint have produced a Adobe file inside my personal file, but that Adobe file only contains Acrobat and Linguistics. So no Flashplayer. Could it be that I have upgraded my system kernel to version 21?

I don't know enough about kernels to know if the 2.6.24-21 kernel is the problem. Mint is using 2.6.24-19 by default. The upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 installed 2.6.27-7 and Ubuntu 8.10 is still using the non-free flash plugin.

May be if you boot Mint with the 2.6.24-19 kernel that might help. In general it's better to use whatever versions are in the repos of a distro and that's especially true with Mint. I never install anything that I can't get with Mint Update. Usually...

Remember Mint isn't Ubuntu and what works in Ubuntu won't always work in Mint. Earlier this year, when I was using Mint 4, I tried installing Ubuntu Studio into Mint from Synaptic. It trashed Mint. The only way to recover was to do a complete reinstall of Mint.

Do you have StartUp-Manager installed? That lets you select the kernel you boot with and can also make a GRUB floppy disk for you. That's really handy to have if anything happens to GRUB on the MBR.

Problems with Flash 10

Postby mikegahan on Tue Oct 28, 2008 5:36 pm

Dear friends
I had similar problems. In the event the only solution that worked for me was to install the Flock browser from the getDeb reposities and it seems to work fine at the moment. I did try other browsers but had various problems - Epiphany did not install properly and Gecko-mozilla was no use. Flock is actually a fast browser and quite well endowed :o

Dear Folks, Startup-Manager wasn't installed, so I installed it. It didn't changed a thing about Flash.
What is Flock? The Flock in synaptics seems not to be a browser.

By the way, I think that when Ubuntu 8.10 is released, it will not take long before there is another upgrade for Mint as well. Right or not?

The Flock browser

Postby mikegahan on Wed Oct 29, 2008 5:05 am

Dear Herman

I found the Flock browser not in the synaptic package manager but in the getDeb repositries, accessed by cliicking on the Mint install radio button then choosing the getDeb option tab, then search the site for "Flock". It installed without problems. It is quite a popular browser in Windoze, and all the major sites have it. It is aimed at young folks doing their Facebook and social networking. I understand you can add mozilla plug ins (though I have not done this yet) and I learn from the Flock website that it is actually based on firefox 3 and optimised for use with websites such as You Tube . Sorry i cannot post more links but I am on my (Windows)work computer at the moment. I did try to make flash work on the Mint version of Opera, but no joy. Please let me know if it works for you

Hey all,
i too somehow found that my flash player wasn't working and decided to follow the update for flash 10.
However, just like quite a few this hasn't worked!

Can someone please write a quick guide on how to remove all aspects of flash including version 9 and 10 that connect to firefox and opera.
Then at least the installation for whatever version might work.

Thanks

Fergus

Hello All - I also am now without flash. I have tried every suggestion on this forum at least ten times. Still no flash. Perhaps the request made by Fergus will be of some use. I frequently use Puppy Linux with flash 9.0.48.0 -no problems. Thanks for any help.

I've got two mint boxes running. My xfce box was an easy upgrade to flash10. It was flawless. My gnome box is being stubborn and won't play nice with flash.

I don't know if gnome really has anything to do with the problems with flash10, but there aren't any glarring difference with those two boxes other than that. I really hope there's a fix for this. I can't even revert back to flash 9 on the gnome/mint box now. I hope the issue is solved before I bite the bullet and do a reinstall.
----------------
*edit* I uninstalled firefox 3 and the flash plug in, did a system update and its all working now. Makes me think I probably should have done it thru the updater to begin with. Either way, it's working great now.
