I dont have any clue on this..., but you can try this:
from the boot screen, go for restore option and when when you get to shell prompt, reset the passwd for the user you created:
passwd <user_name>
and re boot and try logging in with the new password.

I had something similar in Intrepid
It turned out that the keyboard added extra characters when I typed - to sensitive to repetition
Apart from that it does not ring any bells

good catch Husse. The repetion should be there on username field as well, but since the pasword field is not visible, may not be very apparent. One test would be to try cut & paste the password! If that works, then some how the repetion rate needs to be reduced.
