you just mean burning the iso to disk, running it, or what? If your truly worried about 'spoiling' your computer you wouldent be wanted to know more about linux ;) shits gonna happen when you first learn. backup first

The main thing, if you have your BIOS set to try to boot from the CD first (instead of from the hard drive first) then you'll be okay, you'll get to the screen that's shown in the user guide and you won't mess up your computer because the live CD runs from RAM and doesn't affect your hard drive unless you choose to do the install.

So you just need to know how to get into the BIOS settings and check to see what the boot order is and change it if necessary. I guess it's different for different computers but if you don't have instructions handy you can probably get help for that here.
